Initiative of the Grupo Náutica, JAQ signs agreement with Itaipu Parquetec for boats with green hydrogen
The partnership will enhance the use of "energy of the future" in maritime and river transport in Brazil.
Nov 29, 2024
To enable the production of Brazil’s first green hydrogen-powered vessels, a groundbreaking partnership has been established between Itaipu Parquetec, a leader in green hydrogen (H2V) production, and JAQ Apoio Marítimo, a business unit of Grupo Náutica.
The initiative aims to revolutionize Brazil’s maritime and river transportation through decarbonization and the innovative use of green hydrogen as a propulsion energy source.
The agreement was signed this Thursday (29) in Foz do Iguaçu during the opening of the 2nd Foz International Boat Show. Two zero-emission vessels will result from this initiative, with the first set to be unveiled in 2025 at COP30, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, in Belém.

“JAQ’s presence at COP30 will symbolize Brazil’s commitment to decarbonization and the preservation of our biomes,” said Cila Schulman, CEO of JAQ Apoio Marítimo.
“The agreement between Grupo Náutica and Itaipu Parquetec marks a new chapter in the history of sustainable navigation in Brazil and worldwide. Through this project, we will transform these and future vessels into global benchmarks by using green hydrogen as propulsion energy,” stated Ernani Paciornik, chairman of JAQ and president of Grupo Náutica, a leader in the Latin American maritime sector.

“This is only possible because we have a partner like Itaipu Parquetec, which recognized green hydrogen as a solution to tackle climate change, an issue that is already a reality,” added Cila Schulman.

“This project is fantastic. I would say the sky is the limit, but no. The rivers, lakes, and seas are the limit for this project. In two years we will have at Itaipu Parquetec the largest research and technology center in green hydrogen. Foz do Iguaçu and Itaipu will export this technology all over the world,” said Alexandre Leite, Director of Technologies at Itaipu Parquetec.

The document that formalized the partnership between JAQ and Itaipu Parquetec was signed by the Brazilian general director of Itaipu Binational, Enio Verri, and the Paraguayan general director of Itaipu Binational, Justo Aricio Zacarías Irú. On the part of Itaipu Parquetec, the signatures included the financial director, Clerione Raquel Herther, the Technology director, Alexandre Gonçalves Leite, the Business and Entrepreneurship director, Eduardo de Miranda, and the Tourism director, Yuri Benites. JAQ was represented at the ceremony by its chairman, Ernani Paciornik, and CEO, Cila Schulman.

Meet JAQ's green hydrogen boats
Named Explorer H1 and Explorer H2, the vessels will be adapted to operate 100% on green hydrogen. Both will be transformed into floating laboratories, classrooms, and technological platforms to promote research, environmental education, and the preservation of Brazilian biomes, in addition to eliminating greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).

The Explorer H2 boat, measuring 36 meters (118 feet) in length, currently has a hydrojet system for navigation in shallow waters and is located at the INACE shipyard in Fortaleza (CE).

After the presentation of the Explorer H2, JAQ will begin the second phase with the Explorer H1, which will consolidate the initiative as a global reference in sustainable navigation. The Explorer H1, measuring 50 meters (164 feet) in length, is anchored at the Arpoador shipyard in Guarujá (SP) and was designed for diving operations and hydrographic data collection.
